How to cancel Amazon Prime

Check who bills you first

Most Prime memberships are paid to Amazon directly. There are two exceptions. If you joined inside Amazon's Android shopping app or the Prime Video Android app, Google Play may hold the subscription. And if Prime came with another company's service, such as a phone plan, that company manages it. To see what you have, sign in to Amazon in a browser and open Memberships & Subscriptions from your account menu: Prime is listed there with its renewal date.

Paying Amazon directly

1. Sign in to Amazon in a browser and open your Prime Membership page from the account menu.
2. Open the manage option at the top of that page. Amazon labels it Manage Membership or Update, cancel and more.
3. Choose End Membership. On a free trial the option reads Do Not Continue.
4. Follow the prompts to the final confirmation.

Along the way Amazon may offer a different plan or a reminder before renewal instead. The membership is only ended once you reach the confirmation, so don't stop at the first screen.

Paying through Google Play

1. Open the Play Store, tap your profile, then Payments & subscriptions.
2. Choose Subscriptions, tap Amazon Prime, then Cancel subscription.

Amazon's own site cannot end a membership that Google Play bills.

Bundled with another company's service

If Prime is tied to a mobile plan or another provider's package, contact that provider to cancel it. Amazon directs these memberships back to the company that sold them.

When you get a refund

Amazon refunds the current membership period in full if you paid for it and have not used any Prime benefits during it. The refund takes three to five business days. Once you have used a benefit in the period, such as a Prime delivery or a Prime Video stream, the full refund is no longer guaranteed.

What keeps charging afterwards

• Channels you added inside Prime Video, such as Paramount+, are separate subscriptions. They carry on after Prime ends until you cancel each one.
• Open Memberships & Subscriptions after cancelling and go through the whole list. Anything still marked as renewing is still being charged.

How to check it worked

Open the Prime Membership page again. It should show the date the membership ends rather than a renewal date. Keep the confirmation email until that date has passed.

Pay less instead

If the price is the problem, the same membership page lets you switch between monthly and annual billing, and a year paid at once costs less than twelve monthly payments. In the US, Amazon also has a cheaper Prime for young adults and a discounted membership for people on qualifying government assistance.
