How to cancel ChatGPT Plus

Check who bills you first

ChatGPT is cancelled wherever you bought it. A subscription started at chatgpt.com is billed by OpenAI. One started inside the iPhone app is billed by Apple, and one started inside the Android app by Google Play. A subscription bought on the website never shows up in your Apple or Google subscription list, and the reverse is also true. If you aren't sure, the receipt email names the company that charged you. These steps cover Plus and the other personal plans.

Paying on the web

1. Sign in at chatgpt.com.
2. Open your account menu and select Settings.
3. Select Billing.
4. Under Cancel plan, select Cancel.

Paying through Apple

1. Open Settings on your iPhone, tap your name at the top, then Subscriptions.
2. Tap ChatGPT, then Cancel Subscription, and confirm.

If there is no Cancel Subscription button and an expiry date is shown, it is already cancelled.

Paying through Google Play

1. Open the Play Store with the Google account that bought the subscription.
2. Open Subscriptions, select ChatGPT, then Cancel subscription.

If ChatGPT isn't listed, check the other Google accounts on your phone.

Timing and refunds

• Cancel at least 24 hours before the next billing date. Later than that, the next charge may already be on its way.
• Cancelling stops future renewals. It does not refund a charge that has already been made.
• For a refund on a web or Google Play subscription, ask OpenAI's support while signed in to the account that was charged. For an Apple subscription, ask Apple.

What happens after you cancel

• The paid features stay until the end of the period you already paid for, then the account returns to the free plan.
• Removing the app from your phone does not cancel anything.
• Deleting your ChatGPT account ends a subscription that OpenAI bills, but not one that Apple bills. Cancel with Apple first, then delete the account.
• To check it worked, look at the subscription on the platform that bills you: it should no longer be set to renew.

If you can't sign in, or see two charges

If you have lost access to the email address on an account that OpenAI bills, its support team can cancel for you. They ask for the account email, the last four digits of the card, and the date of the latest payment. Never send a full card number. Two charges in a month usually mean two subscriptions under different accounts or platforms, each of which needs cancelling where it was bought.
