How to cancel HBO Max

Check who bills you first

HBO Max is sold by more companies than almost any other streaming service, and the cancel button lives with whoever charges you. Open hbomax.com/subscription in a browser and sign in: it names your billing provider. In the app, select your profile and then Subscription; on a TV, open the settings icon and then Subscription. If it's still unclear, your bank statement will say.

Paying HBO Max directly

1. Go to hbomax.com/subscription and sign in.
2. Choose Cancel Your Subscription.
3. Confirm, and note the expiration date it shows you.

Paying through Apple

1. Open Settings on your iPhone, tap your name at the top, then Subscriptions.
2. Tap HBO Max, then Cancel Subscription.

Paying through Google Play

1. Open the Play Store, tap your profile, then Payments & subscriptions.
2. Choose Subscriptions, tap HBO Max, then Cancel subscription.

Paying through Amazon

Amazon sells HBO Max two ways. As a Prime Video Channel: go to amazon.com/video/subscriptions/manage, find HBO Max under Your Channels and choose Cancel Channel. As a Fire TV app subscription: go to amazon.com/appstoresubscriptions, find HBO Max under Your Subscriptions and turn off auto-renewal.

Paying through Roku, Hulu, YouTube TV or a provider

• Roku: sign in at my.roku.com/subscriptions, find HBO Max under Active Subscriptions, choose Manage subscription and turn off auto-renew.
• Hulu add-on: at hulu.com/account select Manage Add-ons, switch HBO Max off, then Review Changes.
• YouTube TV: at tv.youtube.com open Settings, then Membership, and choose Cancel next to HBO Max.
• Samsung TV: sign in at samsungcheckout.com, open Subscriptions and choose Unsubscribe.
• Cable, satellite and phone providers (AT&T, Cox, DIRECTV and others): sign in to your account with that provider and remove HBO Max there.

What happens after you cancel

• You can stream until the subscription expires at the end of the billing period you paid for, whether that is a month or a year away.
• Deleting the HBO Max app does not cancel anything. Cancel before the next billing date to avoid another charge.
• If you have an Extra Member add-on, it ends with the base plan and the remaining days are refunded pro rata.
• HBO Max emails a confirmation. If you change your mind before the end date, go back to Subscription and choose Resume Your Subscription.

Pay less instead

If HBO Max bills you directly, the same subscription page lets you move to the cheaper plan with ads rather than leaving altogether.
