How to cancel Xbox Game Pass

Turning off renewal, cancelling with a refund, and what you keep

Where Game Pass is billed

Game Pass belongs to the Microsoft account that bought it, and that is where you cancel it, on the web or on the console. Two exceptions: if you subscribed through the Apple App Store or Google Play, Microsoft sends you to Apple or Google to cancel; and if a third party bills you, contact them. If you pay for someone else's Game Pass, the owner of that account has to sign in and cancel.

From any browser

  1. Go to account.microsoft.com/services and sign in with the Microsoft account that bought the subscription. It has to be that account.
  2. Find Game Pass and select Manage.
  3. Select Cancel subscription and follow the instructions. If you are eligible for a refund, you'll be offered the choice to cancel immediately with one.

If the row says Turn on recurring billing instead of Manage, the subscription is already set to expire on the date shown and nothing more needs doing.

On an Xbox console

  1. Press the Xbox button to open the guide.
  2. Go to Profile & system → Settings → Account → Subscriptions.
  3. Choose the subscription, select Cancel subscription, and follow the steps.

Paying through Apple or Google Play

On an iPhone, open Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions, tap the Game Pass entry and Cancel Subscription. On Android, open the Play Store, tap your profile, then Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions and cancel it there. Refunds for these go through Apple or Google too, not Microsoft.

Turning off renewal versus cancelling with a refund

  • The normal cancellation turns off recurring billing: no more charges, and you keep Game Pass until the expiry date.
  • In some countries the law gives you an immediate cancellation with a pro-rata refund. Canada, Denmark, France, Israel, Korea and Türkiye get it on the last charge; Finland, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland and Portugal get it on the last renewal of a subscription longer than a month. Microsoft shows the option during cancellation if it applies to you.
  • Elsewhere, charges already made are generally not refunded, though Microsoft lets you check eligibility case by case on the same page.

What happens after you cancel

  • Games you installed through Game Pass stop launching once the subscription expires. Your saves stay, and anything you bought outright, including at a Game Pass discount, is yours.
  • Microsoft gives at least 30 days' notice of a price change, so a notice in your inbox or in the Xbox messages is your chance to cancel before paying more.
  • Still seeing a charge after cancelling? Another Microsoft account using your card, such as a member of your Xbox family group, may have its own subscription. Each account has to be checked separately.
  • To check it worked, reload the Subscriptions page: the row should show the expiry date and offer Turn on recurring billing.

Free to download. One optional lifetime unlock, never a subscription.

Last checked October 2026. Microsoft renames Game Pass tiers now and then, but the Subscriptions page on account.microsoft.com is always where billing is managed.
